A shot night heron found at Dwejra by a jogger this morning is being treated at the Ghammieri quarantine section. Reader Cindy Anastasi said that she saw the huge wounded bird walking in the road with its wing hanging down. As she approached, it scuttled into some undergrowth terrified. She called the police who contacted the Administrative Law Enforcement section. “They arrived within 15 minutes and were shocked to discover that it was a night heron, a protected species. Upon closer examination it became apparent that the bird had been shot, its wing covered in blood.” The officers told Ms Anastasi they would be taking the bird to the quarantine section at Ghammieri for examination by a vet, who they said  would call her later to tell her how it was doing. Ms Anastasi’s plea to other readers is: “If you do come across an injured animal, just call the police on 112 or the Animal Welfare Ambulance on 7996 9918 and they will help you.  It doesn’t take much and it gives great satisfaction knowing that you have played a party in saving a life. Please do not turn a blind eye.”
