A Spanish woman was handed a suspended jail term today after being convicted of trying to help her friend escape from a police cell at St Julian's police station yesterday.
The case started when the police found Vincent Kyle Trethewey, a South-African, drunk and lying on the ground in Paceville. He had been injured after having been involved in a brawl.
As the police tried to lift him up he became very aggressive and was arrested.
The woman, Claudia Ferrer, 20, disobeyed police orders to stay away and was arrested as well.
Both were taken to St Julian's police station. The man was placed in a cell, and at one point the woman ran to the cell and tried to let him out.
The two were held by the police.
Both pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and disobeying orders. The man also admitted to being drunk in public while the woman admitted trying to help him escape police custody.
Mr Trethewey was condemned to a four-month jail term suspended for a year, while Ms Ferrer was condemned to three months jail suspended for a year.
The court also warned Mr Trethewey of the health dangers of excessive drinking and the legal consequences of being drunk.
