The government has suspended the Sliema timed parking scheme, saying it was introduced without an adequate trial period and it was causing problems to all those who wanted to park in the locality.
The scheme was introduced by Sliema local council and ran into a storm of complaints, particularly by the business community. Teachers in the five schools in Sliema this morning reported for work an hour late in protest over the scheme, as directed by the MUT.
The government said Transport Minister Joe Mizzi would be holding talks with the Sliema council, businesses and the Local Councils Association.
The ministry would also work on a comprehensive parking and public transport plan for the Maltese islands.
