Police Commissioner Zammit.

Police commissioner Peter Paul Zammit has denied that he oversaw police brutality in 1985. “I was never involved in any heavy-handed policing and the facts of this particular case were not those alleged” the Commissioner told The Times. Il-Mument on Sunday reproduced the 1987 testimony of Louis Pace, who claimed he was severely beaten and burnt by officers in the presence of then Inspector Zammit. Mr Zammit had not been able to give his version. “What the article doesn’t say is that Mr Pace was found guilty and served time. The court doctor did not find any evidence of this so-called severe beating,” Mr Zammit said. He admitted that the doctor had found a slight bruise on Mr Pace’s back and “small cigarette burn” on his arm but denied any involvement in mistreatment of suspects. Full story in The Times.
