More rocks may fall near new gas terminal – expert

The rockfall at Delimara on Sunday was expected and more rocks are predicted to fall not far from the new gas terminal, according to geologist Peter Gatt. Dr Gatt, a carbonate geologist, said the incident was very predictable. There is, in fact, a history of collapse in the Delimara area: it happened in 1856 at the place where the power station is situated today. On Sunday, a 52-year-old man from Gudja was seriously injured when boulders fell in the sea and hit the boat he was in. However, Enemalta said that the regasification plant is about 350m away from the location of the incident. The jetty head is about 150m out from the line of those cliffs. The corporation said it was informed by Electrogas Malta, the consortium building the new gas plant, that all necessary measures were being taken to safeguard the plant according to international best practices.
