Former Sliema Mayor Nikki Dimech, who two days ago was convicted of attempted bribery and sentenced to a one-year jail term, has also been interdicted, court documents show. He was acquitted of having threatened a police inspector.
Mr Dimech has filed an appeal.
In handing down her decision, Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit noted that in newspaper interviews given by Mr Dimech after police investigations were started, he had made unfounded allegation against the way the police treated him at police headquarters, such as when he claimed that his inhaler were taken from him. The allegations were shown to be not true.
In deciding to impose the perpetual interdiction, the Magistrate quoted the case made against former Chief Justice Noel Arrigo, who was also interdicted after a bribery conviction.
