Malta slipped four places in this year’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) – published by Transparency International in Brussels today.
According to the 2012 edition, which ranks 176 countries, Malta ranked in the 43rd position – four places lower than last year.
The CPI measures the perceived levels of public sector corruption in countries worldwide.
This year’s ranking classifies Denmark, Finland and New Zealand as the least corrupt countries while Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia are perceived as the most corrupt in the world.
Based on expert opinion, countries are scored from 0 (very corrupt) to 100 (very clean).
Malta scored 57 points out of 100 in this year’s ranking, the same as Mauritius.
