Unusual seawater flooding has been reported in Msida and other parts of Malta such as Marsaxlokk.
The cause is not known, but a similar event was reported two years ago.
Eyewitnesses said seawater had surged right up to the Freedom Monument in Msida.
In Marsaxlokk a number of people drove their parked cars from the road alongside the seafront. An eyewitness said the sea withdrew 'as much as a metre' at one time this morning and then surged back covering a quay and washing away small items such as shoes.
In St Julian's a diner in a seaside restaurateur compared the situation to a mini tsunami'
"The tide went up and down really drastically within minutes," he told timesofmalta.com.
