Malta-born mayor for Islington, UK

  Malta-born Theresa Debono is the new Mayor of Islington, UK. She was sworn in yesterday. Ms Debono was first elected as a Labour councillor for Highbury West ward in a by-election in 2005 and has served as deputy mayor for the past year. She succeeds Barry Edwards who retires from the council after eight years as a councillor in Holloway ward. Ms Debono has lived in Islington for most of her life. Trained in employment law, she works as a HR Manager and employment adviser at Imperial College.
