Career criminal Alfred Bugeja, known as il-Porporina, has been jailed for another two years and four months after he was found guilty of an attempted theft from the university branch of Mid-Med Bank in 1992. Mr Bugeja had originally been acquitted of stealing Lm100 (€233) from a lotto booth, seriously injuring a salesman , carrying a firearm, stealing a Ford Capri, stealing Lm1,000 (€2,330) from the Mid-Med branch at university and relapsing. The Attorney General appealed saying that the Magistrates’ Court had carried out an incorrect evaluation of the evidence and focused only on the alleged hold-up at the lotto booth and not on the other evidence presented. Mr Justice David Scicluna partially confirmed the not guilty judgment but found Mr Bugeja guilty of attempted theft from the bank and relapsing. Mr Bugeja’s fingerprints had been found at the bank.
