Fuel procurement was the responsibility of the whole fuel procurement committee and not the sole domain of the committee's chairman, former Enemalta non-executive chairman Alex Tranter said.
Replying to questions during a Public Accounts Committee hearing this afternoon, Mr Tranter said that decisions were all unanimous and bids were signed by all members. As committee chairman he led the meetings but fuel procurement was not his sole domain.
Mr Tranter was appointed non-executive chairman of Enemalta in July 2005 by former minister Austin Gatt. On February 9, 2010 Tonio Fenech took over responsibility and the following March he informed Mr Fenech he was resigning. He officially stepped down on May 31, 2010.
The PAC is probing the conclusions of an audit of Enemalta’s fuel procurement procedures carried out by the Auditor General.
The Auditor flagged serious shortcomings between 2008 and 2011, prompting Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi to order a criminal investigation.
