Vince Farrugia has submitted his resignation from the post of Director-General of the GRTU. He has held the post for 20 years. The GRTU said its executive council regretfully and unanimously accepted the resignation. The council thanked Mr Farrugia for his service to the business community in Malta and Gozo. He will stay on as advisor to the Executive Council and he will continue to represent Maltese employers in the EESC (European Economic & Social Committee) of the European Union. Mr Farrugia has had a long career in the public and business sectors. He was chairman of the National Tourism Organisation under minister Joe Grima in the 1980s and later served as adviser to then Environment Minister Daniel Micallef, heading an environment institute. He worked privately for a short period before joining the GRTU. He was also a Nationalist candidate in the last European Parliament elections.  Over the past months Mr Farrugia was never far from the headlines as a court heard a case instituted against Sandro Chetcuti, who stands accused of injuring Mr Farrugia when they came to blows at the GRTU's offices. Mr Chetcuti is a former GRTU council member.
