Nationalist MPs this morning called on the government to give the real reasons for the closure of the Family Park in Marsascala, pointing out that air quality readings showed that the level of sulphur dioxide in the air was way below EU limits.
George Pullicino, who had overseen the building of the park as resources minister, said that a fault in the hydroliser of the adjoining waste management plant and resultant air quality issues had been given as the reason for the closure. The hydroliser was meant to be repaired within six weeks.
But four months on, the hydroliser had still not been repaired.
Hydrogen sulphide is produced during bio-digestion. It is flared and produces sulphur dioxide.
Yet readings from the air quality monitoring station on site showed that the level of sulphur dioxide in the air was way below limits. It was the Environment Ministry itself which had referred people to the readings of the air monitoring station, Mr Pullicino said.
