There are no plans for teachers’ hours to be extended, despite media reports that Finance Minister Edward Scicluna had intimated as much. “The Finance Minister touched upon the subject of formal and informal teaching hours while outlining the Government’s vision to increase female participation in the labour force,” a ministry spokesman said. “However, this will be done through the provision of free childcare centres and the extension of after-school care services, such as the Club 3-16,” he said. “The minister specifically pointed out that this does not imply that the Government is contemplating asking teachers to extend current schooling hours,” the spokesman stressed. MUT President Kevin Bonello, who had objected to the comments, said Education Minister Evarist Bartolo had said teachers' working hours would not be changed.
