UK campaigners have written to the Prime Minister Joseph Muscat calling on Maltese Government support for Gibraltar to be given the George Cross for more than 300 years of dedication and courage to the British nation.
So far, the George Cross has only been awarded collectively to Malta and the Royal Ulster Constabulary.
Supporters believe the British territory of Gibraltar should be the third recipient, Kevin Kelway, of the UK Friends of Gibraltar group based in Plymouth said.
"We are writing for your support Prime Minister because of our shared historical, cultural, community and business links that still endure."
"Malta is the crossroads of the Mediterranean and shares many similarities with the people of Gibraltar with diverse cultures over many centuries.
"The Second World War produced many accounts of heroism and sacrifice, but no British territory other than (Malta) played its part with more heroic effort than the people of Gibraltar."
An online petition to raise 100,000 signatures has been created that will eventually be presented to the Prime Minister David Cameron at 10 Downing Street, together with a designated Facebook page.
