A number of trees lining the Boys’ Junior Lyceum in Ħamrun have been savagely pruned, prompting concerned environmentalists to question how youths were expected to respect nature if this was the example given to them within the precincts of their own school.
On Tuesday, NGO Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar got wind of what has been described as “blatant butchery” and alerted Education Minister Evarist Bartolo to intervene and stop the pruning.
A spokesman from the Ministry of Education confirmed Mr Bartolo took immediate action and halted the session.

Ministry condemns butchering of trees
In a statement, the Environment ministry condemned the butchering of trees and noted that a consultative committee was set up in May to work on a legislative framework to protect trees.
This was expected to be concluded in the coming days.
