The thieves, who were armed and wearing masks, stopped and held up a 54-year-old man from Birzebbuga who was travelling in a VW Jetta in narrow Dawret il-Qawra at about 9.35 a.m. They opened his car door, grabbed a bag in which he was carrying cash and drove off in a getaway car after also taking his car keys. According to initial reports, the victim, a Maltese man, had been carrying 10,000 Sterling. The thieves drove towards Qawra church where they parked in a field used as a makeshift carpark and set fire to the getaway car - which had number places which were stolen on July 17 in Mosta. As the flames spread,  five cars were damaged, two of them extensively.  The cars were a Peugeot 106, a Fiat Punto, a BMW 316, an Opel Corsa and a Mitsubishi RVR.   The victim's car was left in the middle of the busy road, pending police investigation, causing a long traffic jam.
