Attorney General Peter Grech

The Attorney General will not publish the report by the EU's anti-fraud office that led to John Dalli's resignation from the Brussels executive, according to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi. Speaking about Mr Dalli's resignation from the European Commission on discussion show Xarabank, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said it was not up to him to publish the report. He said the AG gave him in writing his position against publication of the report, pending further police investigations. The OLAF report contains "unambiguous circumstantial evidence" that shows Mr Dalli was aware that Sliema businessman Silvio Zammit was asking a Swedish tobacco company for money to influence European legislation piloted by the Maltese Commissioner. Dr Gonzi reiterated that three people were being investigated and the rights of all of them had to be safeguarded. He said that at some point the report should be made public and insisted he did not know what it contained. Mr Dalli has asked for the report to be published, convinced it contains nothing that will implicate him in any wrongdoing.
