Bathers at Bahar ic-Caghaq and Ghadira watched disgusted as sewage seeped into the sea this afternoon.
Jim Vella, who was at Ghadira, said reports were lodged with the Mellieha police station and the local council.
A spokesman for the Water Services Corporation said that corporation personnel went immediately to Bahar ic-Caghaq as soon as this portal reported the news and found that the overflow occured due to a fault within the Splash & Fun complex and not the public sewage infrastructure.
The spokesman said the seepage was not sewage but an overflow of sea water from a tank that collected soil on its way to the sea. The complex in question, he said, took immediate remedial action.
The spokesman also said that the WSC checked the pumps and infrastructure at Ghadira and found nothing amiss. The milky-white appearance of the overflow indicated that what was overflowing was not sewage, he said, adding that the situation was, however, still being monitored.
