Updated - Murder investigation launched as missing father and son are found dead

Updated 1.15 a.m. Mario Camilleri, 58, known as l-Imniehru and his son Mario (jr) 21, were found dead at Qajjenza, Birzebbuga tonight. The bodies were found in a field near the former gas installation shortly before midnight. The grim discovery was made a few hours after the police had reported the two men missing. They were last seen at about 8.30 p.m. yesterday. Both men had served prison terms, with Mario Camilleri (sr) having been convicted of drug trafficking and attempting to bribe two judges. His son was convicted of assaulting policemen. Investigations are being led by the homicide squad. A Magisterial inquiry is under way. Those on the scene tonight included Police Commissioner Peter Paul Zammit. In the notice reporting the two men missing, the police had said that Mario Sr. had been last seen driving a grey Volkswagen Passat while his son was seen boarding a red car in Triq is-Siegħ, Ibraġġ. The make of the car was not known.  The police said they were seeking a grey Peugeot Partner in connection with the case.
