Quick thinking bystanders rescued a Briton who found himself in difficulties while swimming just off St Paul's Bay jetty this evening.
The incident happened at about 6 p.m.
The man, who was in his sixties, was swimming with his dog when he found himself in difficulties and could not breathe.
A young woman on the jetty realised that he was signalling for help while struggling to stay afloat.
She grabbed his arm while another woman who was with her ran to get help from a group of men near by.
The man was pulled out of the water while still struggling to breathe. A doctor who was near by gave him immediate attention and an ambulance was called.
He was able to talk to the people by the time the ambulance arrived and took him to hospital.
