Marisa Micallef, the former chairman of the Housing Authority under the Nationalist government, is expected to be appointed ambassador to Washington.
Ms Micallef had been well known for her strong attacks against the Labour Party in the media before she switched to Labour in 2009, a year after Joseph Muscat became leader. She was employed by the party and worked on attracting other former Nationalists to the PL.
A spokesman for the government could not confirm the appointment, saying an announcement would be made in due time.
