Aurora was 16 when she first saw Vincent Fenech from her bedroom window as he marched through the narrow Gżira road where she lived with her parents during the war.
“I couldn’t understand how he knew I was watching him, but as he passed beneath the window, he looked up and gave me the most wonderful smile,” the woman would tell her son, Raymond, whenever recounting the story of how she met his father.
The couple had met during World War II but Vincent’s parents disapproved of their union and even sent prostitutes to his room to get his mind off Aurora.
However, Vincent, as soldier with the King’s Malta Own Regiment, did not give up. The couple’s love was strong enough to face the challenges thrown at them and, thanks to the support of her parents the young couple eventually became husband and wife at the Capuchin’s Chapel in Floriana.
“My mother wore a light blue dress and they had a small reception, hosted by her father, at their house,” their son Raymond Fenech wrote in a short story about his parents’ love which he called Love Among the Debris.
