Former Sliema deputy mayor Cyrus Engerer announced this morning he will be contesting next May’s European Parliament elections on behalf of the Labour Party. Mr Engerer this morning launched an online campaign inviting the public to share ideas on the themes he should emphasise in the EP, should he be elected. “I believe that the first step for representation should be to listen to the wishes and aspirations of Maltese and Gozitan citizens.  It is important for me to know what the Maltese expect out of their Members of the European Parliament and what they their priorities should be once elected,” Mr Engerer said. “It is these priorities that the positive and forward-looking campaign will be based on - the hopes and aspirations of the Maltese nation, in Malta and in Europe.” A gay rights’ activist, Mr Engerer was recently acquitted of circulating pornographic material and computer misuse. He started out his political career within the Nationalist Party but left following the then Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi’s decision to vote against the Divorce Bill in Parliament.
