The lifeless bodies of two women have been recovered from the sea off Fomm ir-Rih, with rescuers suspecting they are two of five French people who were reported missing at sea yesterday.
A capsized boat and a life vest were also found.
The bodies were spotting in the sea in mid-afternoon - 24 hours after the absence of the two men, two women and a 14-year-old boy was reported at Victoria police station in Gozo, sparking a search by the AFM.
Formal identification of the bodies - who were wearing life-vests - still has to be made.
The AFM launched its search yesterday afternoon after the skipper of a yacht anchored off Dwejra, Gozo, reported that the five had not returned from dinner the previous night.
They were last seen leaving Xlendi on a four-metre boat, presumably to return to their yacht, at about midnight on Sunday-Monday night.
Maritime patrol aircraft of the Italian coastguard and the US Sixth fleet, both based in Sicily, are taking part in the search along with fixed wing aircraft and helicopters of the AFM and a Malta-based AB 212 helicopter of the Italian Military Mission.
