People lined the streets of Zejtun this morning as the community mourned Fr Eric Overend, the archpriest for the last 10 years, who died suddenly on Sunday aged 47. The large parish church was also packed with mourners, led by President George Abela.
Before the Mass, a cortège with Fr Overend's coffin slowly made its way through the streets and alleys of the town that only six months ago experienced the death of another young priest, Fr Rene' Cilia, 27.
"This was the second shock in six months," a Zejtun man told timesofmalta.com with tears in his eyes.
The coffin was accompanied by Zejtun's two bands, which played funeral marches. Members of all sports and social organizations in the locality took part.
Many balconies displayed placards reading Grazzi Fr Eric while flags were flown at half mast.
The people applauded as the coffin was carried past and spoke fondly of Fr Eric, who was described as a relentless worker who sought to unite a community where band club and political rivalry has often driven a wedge.
