Enemalta and Streamcast Technologies has inaugurated a €5 million high-end global data center which will be used by Streamcast customers worldwide. The centre is housed deep in cavernous tunnels below the oldest part of the former Marsa power station. The two companies only agreed to set up the centre last November.  The tunnels were selected because they provide stable structures with ideally low temperatures all year round. The chosen site also features a direct connection through fibre optic cables between Malta and Sicily. The data centre will be used by Streamcast customers and is designed with high-end facilities that support continuous operations, the company added in a statement.  Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that Enemalta was once labelled as a major risk in trade but it had now made a huge turnaround. “It’s something we take for granted but in moments like today, where the underground tunnel is being restored, this is a moment to remember how far we’ve come,” he said. The initiative went hand in hand for Malta to become a hub for digital innovation, Dr Muscat added.
