The Wasteserv facility in Marsascala is infested with rats which come out after dark to the detriment of workers’ health, employees told Environment Minister Leo Brincat today. The workers told the minister that they did not have any protective clothing and 60 to 70 rats came out every evening. Dead rats and other animals could also be found all around the facility, together with dangerous chemicals and dangerous waste, including used sanitary towels. Workers, he said, did not have protective clothing, not even gloves, the air conditioning units did not work, there was no fire extinguisher and no fire exit. The workers also complained that while they used to work Mondays to Fridays, their Monday to Friday hours were reduced so that they also worked on Saturdays. Mr Brincat pledged the government’s commitment to ensure that Wasteserv met its targets, bringing to an end the numerous report calling for more transparency and accountability by the company. He said that a stocktake was to be carried out for a clear picture of waste management in Malta, including capital expenditure, tenders and transport, to be presented.
