Cardiologist Albert Fenech was elected to parliament in a casual election this morning to fill the seat vacated by George Pullicino in the tenth district. It will be Mr Fenech's first time in Parliament.
He was elected in a tight race with former MP Karl Gouder, who only fell behind after the distribution of the votes of Joanna Agius.
Mr Gouder still has a slim chance of election from the ninth district, where his 'battle' will be principally with Marthese Portelli, observers said.
Earlier, Charlo Bonnici was elected on the 11th district to fill the seat vacated by former health minister Joseph Cassar and Stephen Spiteri was elected on the second district, to fill the seat vacated by Opposition leader Lawrence Gonzi. Both are returning MPs.
Former minister Censu Galea was elected from the 12th district, beating off stiff competition from his daughter Graziella, the former Mayor of St Paul's Bay.
Counting is taking place on the first casual election - for Simon Busuttil's seat - on the ninth district. However the process is taking long with the Electoral Commission ordering a recount during the first count because of a discrepancy when the voting documents were being tallied.
