Former Nationalist Minister Michael Falzon has been appointed as an independent, non-voting observer on the oil procurement committee, which is being revamped.
He confirmed that the offer came directly from Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi. Before accepting, Mr Falzon said he informally consulted a number of people, including officials within the PN, of which he is a member.
Oil procurement was a highlight of the electoral campaign, with several people having been taken to court for allegedly receiving illegal commissions several years ago.
Mr Falzon, as minister, was responsible for the building of the first phase of Delimara power station. He was later chairman of the Water Services Corporation.
