President George Abela laid flowers on the Freedom Monument in Vittoriosa this morning, accompanied by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Opposition leader Lawrence Gonzi.
It was the first time that the president, the prime minister and the leader of the opposition had jointly taken part in the ceremony. They walked up the monument together, with the president laying the flowers first.
The President was accorded a National Salute and inspected a Guard of Honour mounted by the AFM.
The ceremony was moved forward by a week because Freedom Day, March 31, is Easter Sunday.
The Labour Party will also hold its celebrations today.
