Columnist questioned over blogs

Columnist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia was last night questioned by the police over blogs she uploaded yesterday. Policemen called at Ms Caruana Galizia’s home and escorted her to Mosta police station. A timesofmalta.com video captured her walking in. Ms Caruana Galizia uploaded several posts with political content during the course of the day. The law bans political activities and reports or declarations that may influence voters on the eve of an election and on election day itself. Anybody found guilty of breaking the silence is liable to a fine or a prison term. The police do not have to receive a complaint to prosecute. Many other internet users yesterday also pushed the boundaries of the Reflection Day law, some with subtle and others with not-so-subtle political messages. When asked earlier in the day whether they would be prosecuting anyone, the police said they would have to investigate instances of presumed abuse “on a case by case basis”. “Some networks, such as some social networks, might be considered as private medium,” a police spokeswoman said without elaborating.
