Double murder Brian Vella, who was jailed for life in 2007 on conviction for the killing of Josephine and Gerald Grima, has filed a Constitutional application claiming that the current system which denies remission to prisoners serving a life sentence breaches fundamental human rights.
Mr Vella said the current legal system did not take into consideration the remorse of the prisoner as well as rehabilitation. This went against the principle of reparative justice.
He asked for the law to be declared to be in breach of human rights and for the court to give a suitable remedy.
Lawyers Jose' Herrera, Joseph Gatt and David Camilleri signed the application.
