The Medical Council was not asked to investigate a two-year-old girl’s death despite misdiagnosis confirmed in a Magisterial inquiry. Aimee Abela died of meningitis in February 2011. The seven doctors responsible for her care in hospital have now been taken to court. Chief Government Medical Officer Natasha Azzopardi-Muscat said the decision not to refer to the council was taken because “prima facie there did not appear to be medical negligence”. Dr Azzopardi-Muscat was not CGMO at the time. Officials also felt no disciplinary action was necessary. Instead, the doctors were subjected to an internal “peer review”, which Aimee’s parents were never made aware of, and returned to work. Full story in The Times.
