Jason Bugeja, 23, this morning admitted in court to biting a police officer and kicking another while drunk.
Mr Bugeja’s lawyer, Edward Gatt, explained that his client was beaten up by other men during a boat party on Saturday night. When the boat returned to shore, his assailants threw him into the sea.
On climbing out of the sea the fight continued and the police arrived. They arrested Mr Bugeja who was very drunk.
Dr Gatt said that Mr Bugeja felt it was not fair that he was arrested and his attackers got away with it. So he resisted the police and fought back. He later apologised to police and said he was very sorry.
Mr Bugeja was accused of slightly injuring two officers, threatening them and assaulting them, disobeying their orders and breaching the peace.
Police Inspector Joseph Busuttil confirmed that the accused apologised and said the police would be arraigning the others involved in the fight.
Magistrate Gabriella Vella put off the case for judgement to tomorrow. Meanwhile, Mr Bugeja was granted bail against a €50 deposit and a personal guarantee of €1,000.
