Malta has been ranked 19 in a survey of petrol prices in 60 countries, with No1 being the most expensive.
The survey was conducted by market information agency Bloomberg.
The worst off is Turkey, where a gallon sells at $9.89. Norway comes next at $9.63. The average Pakistani or Indian would have to put in more than a full day's work, on average, to afford a single gallon of petrol in his country. The Bloomberg Gas (petrol) Price Ranking sorts the 60 countries by average retail price and by "pain at the pump," which measures the percentage of average daily income needed to buy a gallon of fuel (1 being the highest) Of course, the agency says, not all petrol tanks are created equal. For example, Americans guzzle more fuel than anyone else. Even low petrol prices in high-consuming countries take a heavy toll on family budgets.
The agency gives the following details for Malta -- Price per gallon of petrol: $7.44; Rank by most expensive petrol: 19; Rank by pain at the pump: 24. Average daily income $55. Share of a day's wages needed to buy a gallon of petrol is 14 per cent. Maltese consume 0.17 gallon of petrol a day, spending about 2.4 per cent of their pay cheques at the pump.
