Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi today categorically condemned any act of corruption and said he did not remember ever being warned about Frank Sammut, who is at the center of Enemalta corruption claims.
"In the most categoric way, I condemn absolutely without any condition any act of corruption," he told the press, adding that his Government always passed on allegations or information about corruption and asked the authorities to investigate.
He said that in the last few years, when allegations surfaced, they were investigated and people were arraigned in court.
Dr Gonzi confirmed that the Permanent Commission Against Corruption had investigated corruption claims about Mr Sammut around 10 years ago.
"Whether it investigated because of a specific request or a reference by an individual, I cannot say. It is up to the commission to say anything it feels it should. On such issues, the competent authority should decide what is best and whether to report to other authorities such as the police," he said, adding that politicians should always remain at arms length.
