The kidnappers of a Maltese man abducted in Libya last Monday should release him at once and unconditionally, the Imam appealed this afternoon.
Pierre Baldacchino, 36, a manager at Saint James Hospital in Tripoli, was abducted while on his way home.
"On behalf of the Muslim community in Malta I would like to express my deep concern and sadness for the continuing abduction of Mr Baldacchino," the Imam said in a statement.
Imam Mahammad Elsadi urged the Tripoli authorities to intensify their efforts to try secure his release in time for Christmas.
"The Libyan and Maltese people have long historical excellent relations of mutual respect, friendship and cooperation. Such an unfortunate incident remains accidental," the Imam said.
Mr Baldacchino's captors are still unknown. Some media reports in Libya claim that kidnappers are asking €5 million as ransom for his release.
The Maltese government is believed to be involved in trying to help track down the father of two.
