Barricades making Coast Road safer

Plastic barricades topped with lights have been placed along the broken white line on the Coast Road to prevent motorists from overtaking, following two head-on collisions within two days. A Transport Malta spokesman told the Times of Malta that on Friday, before the accidents, 110 signs were in place; 34 to indicate the road is two-way, 31 saying that no overtaking is allowed and 45 displaying a 40km per hour speed limit. Other signs of ‘No line markings ahead, proceed with caution’ were also in place. Barriers were also set up following the incidents. A number of motorists have described the road as a “death trap” since parts of the 7.3 kilometre stretch – on the same carriageway – were marked with a broken white line separating the lanes, which indicates that overtaking is permitted. Transport Malta explained that the road markings were drawn up in view of how the road would operate once fully opened later this year. Read more in the Times of Malta.
